Alan Hutton is unsure whether Jadon Sancho's future remains in the Premier League as the Manchester United winger faces an uncertain summer.
Aston Villa loanee Sancho will head back to Old Trafford this summer where his contract is due to expire which is likely to spark a serious scramble for his services.
Reports last week claimed that United could trigger a 12-month extension that would help them guarantee a transfer fee, but if that does not occur, he will be available for nothing.
Sancho is facing a critical summer in the respect of his own career having shown flashes of his quality at Villa, but was unable to cement a regular place in the first team under Unai Emery.
And while the winger, who cost United £73m from Borussia Dortmund, is fighting to rediscover the form that made him one of the hottest properties in the world, ex-Villa defender Hutton is unsure whether that will be in the Premier League.
"It’s a difficult situation for him, because I really like him as a player," he told Goal.
Unai Emery and his squad have brought silverware back to Villa Park by lifting the Europa League crown. And to celebrate, the Birmingham Mail have produced this stunning souvenir special edition, charting Villa's path to glory.
It is full of interviews, features, striking images and celebrations as we look back at a season to remember.
"I think when he was at Dortmund, he was absolutely exceptional. He showed what he's capable of — a player with excellent technique, loved to go one-on-one, create opportunities. We just didn't see that.
"I don't know if it's because the big transfer to Manchester United didn't work out very well and his confidence is a little shaken. I saw at Villa this season, at times, what he's capable of, but perhaps just the transfer fee, the salary, that kind of structure can be discouraging for teams."
"So, whether it's another loan to some European club, we'll wait and see. It's a shame he didn't reach that level."
Bild claimed last week that Sancho is keen on a switch back to Germany to the club that launched his career, with Borussia Dortmund's sporting director, Lars Ricken, aware of the winger's wishes.
Dortmund are also said to be unsure whether Sancho can rediscover the form that lit up the Bundesliga and made him one of the most in-demand wingers in Europe.
Sancho's stock has fallen considerably since his £73m move to United back in 2021, but it was hoped that a move to Villa, after a spell at Chelsea, would present a good opportunity to establish himself again.
But he has been unable to cement a place in Unai Emery's starting XI in the Premier League in which he has made just nine starts.
