Newcastle United are preparing to move quickly to secure offensive reinforcements following Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona.
Gordon flew to Spain to complete his medical on Thursday morning, bringing Newcastle close to the first major sale of a summer that is expected to reshape Eddie Howe’s squad entirely.
The Gordon deal is reportedly viewed internally as “necessary” business, with the club having planned for his possible exit for months amid endless links to a few European giants, including once-landing-candidate Bayern Munich.
“A swift resolution to Anthony Gordon’s future will allow Newcastle United to unlock their summer spending,” iNews’ Mark Douglas [reported](https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/newcastle-transfers-anthony-gordon-exit-4441739) on Thursday.
According to Douglas, Newcastle’s main priorities immediately after Gordon’s sale are replacing the winger as well as signing a new goalkeeper.
“A replacement for the England international and a goalkeeper now understood to be their priorities,” Douglas reported.
Newcastle is reportedly targeting several wide options to fill Gordon’s gap, including Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, Lyon’s Malick Fofana, and Real Betis winger Ez Abde, per Douglas.
The Gordon sale also gives Newcastle more room to operate after a season in which financial rules remained a major factor.
“Insiders have talked about a ‘re-invention’ of the squad,” Douglas reported about the expected squad retooling to be completed through the upcoming transfer window.
