Newcastle United favourite agrees surprise move to the Championship

Trippier left Newcastle United as a free agent at the end of the campaign, having made 160 senior appearances for the Magpies after joining from Atletico Madrid in January 2022.

The 35-year-old made his final Newcastle outing as Eddie Howe’s side beat West Ham United 3-1 in their final home game of the campaign, and it has not taken him long to decide on his next move.

Trippier has been offered a range of different opportunities from clubs both at home and on the continent, but has decided to remain in England rather than head back abroad.

He has agreed to join Wolves, and is set to sign a two-year deal at Molineux, with an option for a further 12 months, when he returns from holiday next week.

He will assume a senior leadership role under former Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards as Wolves look to regroup in the Championship following their relegation from the top-flight this season.

Edwards sees Trippier as a powerful role model within the dressing room and a valuable asset on the pitch despite his advancing years.

The full-back is understood to be excited at the prospect of playing in the Championship next season and is pleased to be remaining in England as he looks to extend his playing career by at least another couple of seasons.

Speaking after the end of his time at Newcastle was announced, Trippier said: “The time has come to leave this amazing club after four-and-a-half years. This is where I have felt most at home. It's emotional, and I'm really going to miss it.

“I want to say a massive thank you to the supporters for all the support through the good and the bad times. You've always supported me, always stood by me.

“To my team-mates, it's going to be emotional. It's been an amazing journey with you guys. I'm going to miss you all, but to win a trophy with you guys was really, really special - the best of my career.

“And to the manager, Eddie Howe, all the coaching staff and the team behind the scenes, a massive thank you. The gaffer had the trust - twice - to sign me, gave me the opportunity to represent and captain this great club and most importantly, we managed to win a trophy.”
