On their list of transfer priorities this summer, Leeds United recruitment chiefs may well scribble down ‘goalkeeper’, perhaps with gritted teeth.

Lucas Perri was supposed to be the main man for the next few years, not a £15.6m gamble that could come good in time. Instead, for a second year running, Karl Darlow has worked his way up from back-up to dethrone Daniel Farke's number one pick.

The Welshman has more than earned his place with some terrific performance and thrilling saves, one of which - a close-range reaction to Wolves’ Ladislav Krejci - is up for save of the season.

Yet the truth is that, initially, Farke did not deem Darlow ample enough for a full season - hence the reason why money was splashed on Perri in the first place. There is a pondering over how Leeds chiefs landed on the shot-stopper from Lyon, who were in financial strife at the time.

Farke was quizzed on his goalkeeper situation after Darlow’s rare errors against Arsenal in January and dropped a big hint. He explained: “Our board knows exactly my feelings about what I think we should do during this window.

“As I mentioned several times, I won't speak publicly too much about my opinions, because it makes the market just more difficult. And for that, sadly, I can't honestly answer the question.

“So of course, we're always looking to improve the squad and to bring quality players in, and especially in positions where we are perhaps a bit weaker. That's for sure.”

Farke would confirm in a later press conference that his list of targeted areas at the start of the window did not change as ir progessed, barring a back-up left-wing-back amid Jack Harrison’s loan to Fiorentina.

Darlow has his supporters who wish to see him stay as number one next season. A bigger portion of the fanbase are more aligned on the view that he should be handed a new deal this summer, with his current contract expiring by July.

It seems Farke is of this mind too. When asked about Darlow’s contract at the end of April, he refrained from saying too much but said supporters could “read between the lines” after giving him a glowing appraisal.

Where the most hesitation might come from is the player’s side. Turning 36 next season but proven he can hack it at the Premier League level, would Darlow settle for second fiddle once again?

The board would open itself up for criticism if no new goalkeeper was acquired. There could be argument that Leeds bring in an understudy for him to eventually take on the gloves from Darlow, though there are obvious risks with this.

For what it’s worth too, despite transfer links, Leeds hold no active interest 22-year-old World Cup bound Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek of SC Braga, albeit he did at some stage come across the recruitment team's radar.

Classed as a good 'keeper but with no intention of an approach, perhaps this offers a glimpse of a hint into their thoughts on going young.

Then there is what to do with Perri, who theoretically could slip to third choice upon a new arrival - although other conclusions seem more feasible. Leeds would take an on-the-books financial hit of the were to sell Perri, who has three more years still left on his deal, given his troubling maiden season.

Leeds are initially set to be marginally worse off under the new Squad Cost Ratio framework that is set to replace profit and sustainability regulations this summer, albeit in a few years and with the completion of the West Stand expansion, they will be better off if still a Premier League outfit.

Bu the point is, spending limits will be squeezing tighter in the immediate future which is why chairman Paraag Marathe says recruitment will be “strategic and disciplined” this summer. So every cash loss hurts.

And then there is a wider issue. Goalkeepers come at a premium anyway and the market is small. The World Cup can inflate prices.

Farke recently half-joked that sometimes the tournament can be bad in this regard should clubs have identified a specific target and he performs well at the finals. There are not many tried and tested premium goalkeepers and those who are available will be snapped up quickly.

For many, Manchester City’s James Trafford - set to leave this summer, probably on loan - would be the perfect signing. But he would not be the long-term option needed if he is to be a loanee and European-competing outfits will also fancy his services.

At the other end of the scale, Nick Pope could well leave Newcastle United given he has a year left on his deal. A recent poll by sister site Chronicle Live shows that only 30.5% of supporters would keep hold of Pope this summer.

While fan favour is not everything, it does give insight into what Leeds would be getting, having at one stage this season lost the number one jersey himself. Another Perri situation is not needed and given Pope's age of 34, there is a valid case to just stick with Darlow anyway.
