Sheffield United’s new promotion rivals ‘agree deal’ to sign former Newcastle United star on…

Wolves are in the process of a major summer rebuild after suffering relegation from the Premier League

Championship promotion hopefuls Wolves are edging closer to a statement signing in the form of 54-time England international Kieran Trippier.

BBC Sport understands the former Newcastle United right-back has agreed a two-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months, to become Rob Edwards' first summer signing.

Trippier is leaving Newcastle at the end of his contract this summer after four-and-a-half spectacular years in the North East where he made 160 appearances across all competition, chipping in with four goals and an impressive 29 assists with one of those coming in the Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool in 2025, with the Magpies ending their long 70-year wait for domestic silverware.

Now aged 35, Trippier is a player that if the move materialises will bring significant experience to a Wolves team pushing for an immediate return to the top-flight after finishing bottom of the Premier League with a measly 20 points.

Trippier has played at this level before, both with Barnsley as a youngster on loan, and later with Burnley on Sean Dyche - helping the Clarets to automatic promotion in 2014 while registering an impressive 12 assists and making the PFA Team of the Season for the second year in a row.

The Bury-born defender played 114 times for Tottenham Hotspur after leaving Burnley, eventually succeeding Sheffielder Kyle Walker as the club’s first choice right-back while also forming part of the team which reached the Champions League final in 2019.

The former England international also lifted the league title with Atletico Madrid in 2021 and formed a key part in the Three Lions team which reached the final of both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

Trippier is renowned for his leadership in the dressing room, he was the first signing of the Eddie Howe era at Newcastle United and a catalyst for the club’s return to the Champions League.

He’s a great set-piece taker and a culture setter behind the scenes, something which is understood to be very appealing to Wolves as they compete with the likes of Sheffield United, West Ham and Burnley among others for a promotion place, in what’s likely to be a more open Championship than ever before with six play-off places as opposed to the traditional four places fans have become accustomed to in years gone by.

The 2026/27 EFL fixtures will be released on Thursday June 25 at 12pm. The Blades will be hoping for a much better start than the season just gone where it took them seven matches to register their first victory.
