Bournemouth 'considering options' for Celtic fan favourite as talks planned - but Parkhead…

Celtic’s chances of re-signing loan star appear slim as Premier League club weigh up several options

Celtic reportedly face strong competition to bring Julian Araujo back to Glasgow on another loan deal this summer - with his parent club AFC Bournemouth considering a number of options for the out-of-favour defender.

The 24-year-old created a strong impression as part of Martin O’Neill’s side during the second half of the season before a thigh injury cut short his time at Parkhead.

Araujo returned to the south coast club for treatment in April after interim Hoops boss Martin O’Neill confirmed he would not be fit enough to feature during the final weeks of the campaign.

The right-back - bound for this summer’s World Cup with host nation Mexico - endeared himself to the Celtic fans after scoring a hugely important injury-time winner against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in mid-February and spoke in glowing terms about his short stint in Scotland.

The Scottish champions were understood to be keen on to hold discussions with the English Premier League outfit over the possibility of taking him on a second season-long loan - or a potential permanent switch - even though first-choice full-back Alistair Johnston has now fully recovered from his long-term injury. They also have back-up in the position with Anthony Ralston and Colby Donovan.

Bournemouth are said to be weighing up Araujo’s next steps after the player was informed he has no future at the club, despite remaining under contract until 2029.

According to El Heraldo, he could be set for a return to his homeland with Mexican champions Cruz Azul and fellow Liga MX side Monterrey both actively exploring loan options.

Mexican journalist Gerardo González reported via Vamos Azul that Monterrey have already made contact with Araujo’s representatives as they look at potential additions for next season. It’s claimed that initial talks came through the club’s sporting director, Dennis te Kloese.

At this stage, there is no suggestion that a transfer is close. However, it’s believed Araujo would consider returning to North America if the right opportunity presents itself.
