£52m release clause: Newcastle now in talks for former Barcelona winger; he wants move

Whilst Anthony Gordon takes in the sights for the first time in Barcelona, Newcastle United have shifted their focus towards signing an attacking star of their own.

Newcastle targeting £52m winger

It has been a nightmare 12 months for the Magpies. They've gone from ending their trophy drought and qualifying for the Champions League to losing Alexander Isak, missing out on European football altogether, and even finishing below rivals Sunderland.

Gordon has only compounded their misery ever since, too. He's in Barcelona to complete a move worth around £69m - marking the second major exit out of St James' Park in the last two summers.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer had his say on the winger's departure, saying: "I think Newcastle have been scarred by the [Alexander] Isak situation and can never be put in that situation again.

"I mean, clearly, Anthony Gordon wants to leave so, I guess Newcastle's thoughts are, well, if that is the case, we get what we can for him, and then we start and plan, and never be put in that same situation again.

"I think there's a part of… you'd never want to be bitten twice, like they did last summer. Whether they could have got more for him, I don't know. I guess the timing is right now so they can plan."

Shearer is certainly spot on about the timing and those in Tyneside have instantly turned their focus towards a potential replacement.

According to TeamTalk, Newcastle are now in talks to sign Abde Ezzalzouli from Real Betis. The talented winger has a release clause worth €60m (£52m) and is keen on a Premier League move ahead of next season.

A former Barcelona youngster, Ezzalzouli has stolen plenty of headlines since leaving the Catalan giants - recording as many as 28 goal involvements this season.

Ezzalzouli can replace Gordon at Newcastle

On paper, the numbers suggest that Newcastle could be landing an upgrade on Gordon in Ezzalzouli. The Real Betis man enjoyed an excellent campaign and looks ready to take the Premier League by storm after 15 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

League stats 25/26 Gordon Ezzalzouli

Minutes 1,814 2,255

Goals 6 10

Assists 2 8

XG 8.79 9.34

Successful dribbles 33 39

The 24-year-old was more direct, more clinical and more creative than Gordon. If Newcastle can snap him up, then losing the latter could look like a blessing in disguise this summer.

There would, of course, be a certain level of irony if a La Masia talent not only replaced Gordon, but became an instant upgrade on him at St James' Park.
