Cherries want to keep veteran keeper Forster after impact in six-month deal

Forster joined the club in January on a six-month deal after half a season as a free agent, to provide emergency cover after Will Dennis picked up an injury, meaning Djordje Petrovic was the only keeper in the squad.

He has not played a minute for the team – but his impact has been significant.

The former England international and Lazio loanee Christos Mandas both joined the Cherries in January and helped Petrovic to raise his game, and the Serbian has been brilliant ever since.

Andoni Iraola often mentioned the impact of both. Forster has been something of a mentor to Petrovic, while Mandas provided real competition to him for the number one spot.

As such, the club are keen to replicate the keeper situation they had in the second half of the season, as the club went unbeaten and reached the Europa League.

Bournemouth want to have three keepers, with Petrovic their number one going into the season. Forster, if he agrees to stay, will fill the third choice berth and will continue to play the same role he did in the back end of last term.

Forster also provides plenty of European experience in both the Europa League and in the Champions League, which could prove invaluable to the club next season in their first foray into continental competition.

Mandas’ loan move has ended and the Cherries will not be triggering the option to buy in his deal, but they are willing to have him back on loan if they can negotiate terms with Lazio.

Either way, the club wants competition for Petrovic, so if they are not able to agree terms for the Greek to return on loan, then they may look to bring in another keeper from elsewhere.

For Dennis, the 25-year-old headed out on loan in January to Leyton Orient for some game time, and he has been impressive for the League One side.

Bournemouth are keen for him to continue playing to ensure he continues to develop, so they will be looking for another loan for the stopper.

Another keeper who will head back out on loan from Bournemouth is Alex Paulsen.

The Kiwi keeper had plenty of gametime at Lechia Gdansk, but they were relegated.

Bournemouth believe Paulsen needs to build his physicality as he is not ready for that aspect of the Premier League in particular, so they will be looking to loan him to a team in a league like the Belgian or Dutch top flights.
