Liverpool made strong enquiries regarding Anthony Gordon before the winger’s move to FC Barcelona, with reports suggesting the club explored a late opportunity to bring him to Anfield.
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Liverpool checked on the possibility of a deal, but quickly discovered the player’s preference was to move elsewhere as talks progressed.
Joyce reported: “The Anfield hierarchy is choosing to give priority to addressing gaps in Liverpool’s squad created by the departure of Salah and also Hugo Ekitike’s injury. That would suggest they are seeking at least two attacking signings.
“Yan Diomande is high on Liverpool’s wanted list, while the club also made strong contact with Anthony Gordon’s camp only to discover that he preferred a move to Barcelona.”
Gordon has now officially joined Barcelona, but it’s a good thing he has not joined Liverpool. While the Englishman is a good player, he’s not what Liverpoool need in the summer market.
Liverpool are losing Mohamed Salah – the greatest attacker they’ve had in the modern era. To effectively replace his attacking output, they need a player with higher goals and assists than Gordon has so far proven himself capable of.

Long-standing Liverpool admiration for Gordon
Liverpool’s interest in Gordon is not new. The club have tracked the England international for several years, valuing his high intensity, direct dribbling, pressing ability, and proven Premier League experience.
Back in the summer of 2024, a potential deal with Newcastle United was seriously explored, with reports at the time even suggesting a medical had been arranged and a possible swap involving Joe Gomez had been considered. However, Newcastle’s financial situation was ultimately resolved without needing to sanction a sale.
Two years later, Liverpool revisited the situation, but the circumstances had shifted significantly with Barcelona now having won the race.
The squad has undergone changes following the departure of Mohamed Salah, while an injury to Hugo Ekitike has further increased the urgency to strengthen in forward areas.
While Gordon was not ultimately persuaded to consider a return to Merseyside, the club’s interest reflects a clear strategy of identifying Premier League-proven attackers who can immediately strengthen the squad.
