Sonia Bompastor on being brave and trying a new format at World Sevens

After winning three games from three at the World Sevens tournament, Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor explained why she has been enjoying participating in something a little different.

With a carnival atmosphere at the Gtech Stadium in Brentford, supporters have been enjoying seeing inventive walkouts and silky skills in the seven-a-side matches.

And as the women’s game continues to grow, Bompastor enthused over how the World Sevens can contribute to its success.

‘I think we have to be brave to try different formats in the women's game because, as you just mentioned, I don't think we have the same fanbase (as the men’s game),’ she said. 'And actually, this format is really about having fun, enjoying football, bringing people into the stadium, and celebrating as a team with the fans.

‘I think our fans are younger; maybe there are more families, and I think they will all enjoy this format.

‘This tournament brings the best teams in this league, and I think it's exciting to see great players in these types of games.’

Bompastor’s players have been playing with huge smiles on their faces in the May sunshine, capping off the season in a positive fashion.

While the Blues have clearly enjoyed their three outings so far, the boss remains focused on doing what we do best at Chelsea - winning games.

That’s been clear as we have earned a 100 per cent record against Everton, Leicester City and London City Lionesses before we head into Saturday’s semi-final.

‘I think it's important sometimes to have this opportunity to finish the season with something fun,’ Bompastor continued. ‘And I think this format allows us to actually watch some games where you can see great technicality and ability from the players, but also it’s just having fun, being together, and finishing on a high.

‘The expectations on Chelsea are always high, even when you play a friendly tournament, I would say. Our identity is to try to win every game, and we came here with the same mindset.

‘We know the best way for us to have a chance to do that is to be a team and to enjoy it together.’
