Bournemouth forward Rayan has spent the past few months forcing his way into conversations about Brazil’s future. Now, he is preparing to take part in his first World Cup at just 19 years old.
The young attacker has enjoyed a remarkable rise since arriving in England. He surely is now one of the protagonists in the squad.
After scoring five goals and providing two assists in his first 14 appearances for Bournemouth, he earned the trust of Carlo Ancelotti and secured a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad.
That journey took another step this week when Rayan faced the media at Brazil’s training camp.
Part of ‘a very few’
Speaking during his first press conference of the tournament, the youngster reflected on what the moment means to him. RTI Esporte relayed his comments.
“It’s a moment of happiness and a moment to enjoy what I’m living right now,” he said.“Playing in a World Cup at 19 years old is for very few people. Hearing my name on the list was a moment of happiness, not only for me but for my family as well.”
Rayan also referenced his background while discussing the achievement.
“For a boy who came from the favela, to be playing in a World Cup… I’m very happy. Now it’s about enjoying it and bringing the sixth World Cup to Brazil.”
Learning from Casemiro and Danilo
Rayan also revealed he has received guidance from some of the most experienced figures in the squad.
According to the attacker, Casemiro and Danilo have taken an active role in helping him and fellow youngster Endrick settle into the group.
“Casemiro and Danilo always talk to me and Endrick because we are the youngest players in the squad,” he explained.“We are 19 years old and still have a lot to work on and a lot to learn.”
He also highlighted Casemiro’s influence within the dressing room.
“They always tell us to go onto the pitch and play freely, while understanding the weight of representing Brazil. Casemiro is a great leader for us.”
Ready to play anywhere
One factor that may help Rayan earn minutes during the tournament is his versatility.
The Bournemouth forward explained that he is comfortable across the entire front line and is prepared to play wherever Ancelotti – or Marco Rose – needs him.
“We never had a conversation about a preferred position, but I think he knows I can play in all three positions up front”, he said.“I can play on the right wing, as a centre-forward or on the left wing.”
Rayan admitted competition for places remains fierce but insisted his focus is unchanged.
“There is a lot of competition in attack, but as I always say, it’s about working hard, giving my best and, when the opportunity comes, doing what I do best – scoring goals and providing assists.”
For the Cherries, seeing their January signing become a World Cup player so quickly is another sign that they may have secured one of the most exciting young attackers in European football.
