The fall-out of Leeds United not ticking off this clear priority is not hard to envisage

At the core of Leeds United's squad - one that Daniel Farke says needs to be retained next season - there is a clear nucleus.
The likes of Joe Rodon, Pascal Struijk and now Anton Stach and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all provide the core of Farke's machine, but none are as important as Ethan Ampadu. The skipper is the engine, the catalyst, the quarter-back, the on-pitch manager and the enforcer all in one.
There is a reason why Farke has more than once labelled him as his most important player. But this most important player is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract as things stand after a stellar season.
Ampadu suffered three successive relegations in three years while on loan at Sheffield United and Italian clubs Venezia and Spezia between 2021 and 2023 but he has been integral in Leeds avoiding the drop this season. In fact, he might be irreplaceable, certainly within current options.
For a man that cost just £7m, Ampadu has been one of the bargains of the Farke era, and there have been a few. He might be the best given what he has offered Leeds.
Ampadu himself has had to readapt to the top flight once more. His ability to acclimatise was one of the questions of last summer and the 25-year-old, who was one of the few midfielders who had Premier League experience, was one figure Leeds were always going to lean on.
No journey is smooth and there were bumps in the road but there is no doubting that Ampadu has stepped up this season; so much so that the wider football community has started to take notice.
Already there is speculation about rival clubs taking an interest, and Ampadu will not be the only core player who is the subject of such links this season. But out of them all, Ampadu is the one whose contract renewal should be prioritised.
While his on-field exploits and vital communication are evident, teammates value his stature away from the field and see him as a real leader, but also an on-par colleague.

His professionalism at his job while also being able to dish out banter - such as the cutting of Alex Cairns’ socks or humorously reprimanding a teammate for stealing his sliders - all feeds into keeping squad spirits high, which is something Farke places great value in.
That he has not been handed a renewal before now perhaps speaks to last summer’s ambiguity over his ability to hack it back in the Premier League, but there was never any doubting his off-field impact.
When times got tough this season, Ampadu - as is the duty of a club captain - faced up to the microphones and the glare of the cameras. Even after the essentially meaningless 3-0 defeat to West Ham on Sunday, the Welshman was the first to underline Leeds dropped below standards.
And he is just that - a standard setter. During the warm-up of the last three games, during which Leeds’ survival had already been secured, Ampadu could be seen geeing up his players and ordering them to keep levels high.
It is these elements that endear him to Leeds fans but will also make him of interest to rivals. Leeds have their own transfer ambitions this summer but the first priority has to be to secure the future of Ampadu.
Much like with Farke - who also has 12 months left on his contract - the longer a renewal is not penned, the more the elephant in the room lingers over the coming summer and season. The 49ers will know this, Farke knows this, the player himself knows it too.
There appears a clear desire for Leeds to keep Ampadu, who still has his peak years ahead of him. The bigger question likely resides in the player’s camp if new pastures look luring - albeit there is no suggestion of this as of the time of writing.
In fact, very little is known about discussions right now and that is the way the 49ers like it. They will know the importance of keeping Ampadu and the fan reaction if talks do not go as planned or worse still, the captain leaves. The impact that would have on the squad would be likewise seismic.

Players who sign always wish to know that there are other quality teammates besides them that will help bring the best out of them. Ampadu is undoubtedly of that ilk and allowing the unthinkable would dent Leeds’ transfer plans.
For this and many other aforementioned reasons, it is pretty obvious why a new contract for Ampadu has to be the first transfer priority of the summer. Securing his future before the window opens and offers can arrive is important.
