Anthony Gordon's transfer from Newcastle United to Barcelona was confirmed on Friday evening and it has been almost universally well received.

But not in Munich, where German champions Bayern had thought they were favourites to secure Gordon as their priority signing this summer ahead of the World Cup.

Vincent Kompany was keen to add Gordon to their ranks in Bavaria but Bayern had an internal spending limit they did not want to breach and when Barcelona met Newcastle's demands with a package worth around £69million, Bayern were unwilling to match it.

As a result, Gordon jetted into Catalonia on Thursday and was presented as a new Barcelona player on Friday as both Newcastle and the Blaugrana confirmed the move.

It has left those of a Bayern persuasion asking what's next and club legend Thomas Muller, who now plays in MLS with Vancouver Whitecaps, was puzzled as to why a player would choose Barcelona over his former side - despite conceding playing under his former coach Hansi Flick would be a decisive factor.

"If Barcelona and Bayern come, what was the deciding factor for Gordon not coming to Munich?" Muller asked on the BILD podcast 'Bayern Insider'.

"I know Hansi Flick very well, of course. It’s a lot of fun playing under him, both in terms of his leadership and his style of play. But I would go to FC Bayern."

Gordon has penned a five-year deal at the Camp Nou and will now join up with the England squad in Florida on Monday ahead of this summer's World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
