Newcastle United have poached the former Sunderland man from Scottish side Rangers.

Fowler was assistant manager to the club’s Head of Football Strategy, Jack Ross, at St Mirren and Sunderland before returning to Kilmarnock, where he spent 14 years as a player, as their Head of Football Operations.
The 45-year-old then started coaching in Rangers’ academy before stepping into the role of Head of Academy Scouting & Recruitment with the work he has carried out in the last two years earning him a move to Newcastle.

Fowler is set to arrive as the Magpies’ Scouting Operations Manager, working closely with Academy Recruitment Director Paul Midgley and Academy Scouting Director Paul McLaren.
Rangers man posts farewell message ahead of Newcastle United move
“This week is my last as Head of Academy scouting and recruitment at Rangers Football Club before I begin another exciting opportunity,” Fowler wrote on LinkedIn.
“Reflecting back on my time heading up the department I have been fortunate to work alongside some very driven and talented individuals, both part time & full time scouts & coaches, and I thank them for their support & constant drive to make Rangers the best in everything they do.
“In particular, Cameron Dickson is someone who I have worked particularly closely with, he has added real value to the Academy recruitment department & was always a great support. With his work ethic, knowledge, people skills & eye for talent, he is someone who has an exciting future in Leadership roles within football.
“I have witnessed first hand how the Academy multi disciplinary team always go above and beyond to help create the best environment & opportunities for the players.
“The coaching staff, as well as those in senior positions within the Academy, do an amazing job and always have the best interests of the young people at the forefront.
“Thanks to Zeb Jacobs & Nils Koppen for offering me the opportunity to lead the department and work at such a historic football club.
“I wish Dan Purdy, David McCallum & everyone connected with Rangers Football Club good luck in the future, hopefully we continue to see more 1st team minutes for Rangers academy players next season.”
Fowler will be responsible for the European scouting operation as Newcastle make a bigger push towards identifying young talent between the ages of 15 and 18.
