Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall named as key to changing Everton's attacking play - 'this is just a start'

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is helping to make Everton a more attack-minded team like David Moyes wants says former Blues winger Pat Nevin

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been a key transfer signing for Everton as David Moyes looks to go on the attack.

That’s the verdict of Pat Nevin, who made the same move himself, swapping Stamford Bridge for Goodison Park in a £925,000 move and going on to make 150 appearances for the Blues between 1988-92, scoring 21 goals. Although Everton lacked a prolific individual goalscorer in 2025/26, they spread the goals around more than they have ever done before in the Premier League era.

As pointed out by Bradley Cates (EFC Statto), three players scored at least eight league goals for the Blues this season (Beto on nine with Thierno Barry and Dewsbury-Hall both on eight) and this is the first time three Everton players netted eight plus league goals in a single season since 1989/90 when Tony Cottee got 13 while Kevin Sheedy and Norman Whiteside both struck nine times apiece.

You have to go back to the 2018/19 season when Marco Silva was in charge and Everton struck 54 times to top the 47 Premier League goals they scored as a whole this term and in the subsequent period, the figure has only been matched once by Carlo Ancelotti’s team in 2020/21, a campaign that was mostly played behind closed doors. While he and Iliman Ndiaye both saw their form and finishing tail off late in the season as the Blues ended without a win from their final seven matches, Dewsbury-Hall’s goals from deep helped add a new dimension to the team’s play following his £25million move from Chelsea last August.

It was a point that Dewsbury-Hall himself addressed on social media, telling his 409,000 followers on Instagram: “Awful end to the season after a promising campaign, miles off it to be honest.

“A long summer now to review and come back bigger and better next year. Thanks for all the love in my first season here.”

Speaking courtesy of Grosvenor Casinos, Nevin said: “David Moyes is now actually doing what he’s always wanted to do, which is to be more offensive. You’ve got Ndiaye, you’ve got Jack Grealish, you’ve got really good players in that area.

“I love Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. He’s a right good player who was doing nothing at Chelsea.

“He was wasted at Stamford Bridge, but Everton are getting the best out of him. But this is just a start as far as I can see with Everton.”
