Liverpool is set to fire Arne Slot after the conclusion of the Premier League season in a shock turn of events at Anfield.

The Reds won the Premier League title in Slot's first season in charge but this campaign was a dismal one with Liverpool ending the season in fifth in the table and suffering a run of poor results.

That was enough to secure Champions League qualification and it was expected that that would be enough to keep Slot in the job until next season at least. But according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Slot will be fired with 'immediate effect'.

It remains to be seen who will replace the Dutchman but ex-Reds midfielder Danny Murphy wants his former club to go for Luis Enrique.

"If Slot doesn't start well, it's [pressure] going to start again,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

"I don't think he's got a big say in the players [recruitment], by the way. But I think he's going to have some sort of say in the players that come in.

"But if he starts badly and they're sitting in fifth, sixth after eight games, it's done."

Should that eventuality transpire, then Murphy thinks there is only one manager his former club should go for.

"I would try and break the bank and do anything I can to get Luis Enrique,” he said.

Enrique will, of course, have the chance to win back-to-back Champions Leagues this weekend as Paris Saint-Germain takes on Arsenal to be crowned European champions.
