Arne Slot has sent a message to Liverpool fans after being fired by the Anfield side, a year on from winning the Premier League title.

Following a season review, it was determined that the best course of action was to part ways, with Andoni Iraola among the potential candidates to take over. It is understood that the Reds have reluctantly come to the conclusion that to play the kind of style they want moving forwards, a change in the dugout was the best decision for the club.

"It’s been an amazing ride together with Liverpool," Slot told Fabrizio Romano. "I am so grateful that we were able to win the league last season."

Liverpool is looking to move towards a faster and more aggressive playing style, something that Mohamed Salah had spoken about shortly before his departure.

It has been determined by the Liverpool hierarchy that Slot was not the right man to lead that into the summer and beyond. The process of identifying the next person to take charge is already underway.

A year after winning the title with Liverpool, things turned sour quickly. As a result, it was determined that a change was required, though Slot's role in the major success of the previous season should not be understated.

Andoni Iraola, after leaving Bournemouth, is one of the names that will inevitably lead the speculation. He worked alongside Reds sporting director Richard Hughes on the south coast.

No decision on Slot was taken during the season, with a period of reflection following to work out the best next steps. A candidate who fits the profile for how Liverpool wants to play will now be identified in the coming days.

In a joint statement, Liverpool’s ownership Fenway Sports Group (FSG) underlined its appreciation for the success Arne brought to the club and also the leadership displayed in his two years in charge: "That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying.

"The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and — most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves — successful.

"As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.

"From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it.

"This was evident when he agreed to take over as head coach, when he guided us to the Premier League title and throughout the season just ended when he faced considerable challenges and burdens.

"At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but."
