‘Six years’ - Liverpool comments on Alexander Isak backfire after £125m Newcastle United move

Liverpool announced earlier today that Arne Slot will leave the club with immediate effect.

Arne Slot expected to have Alexander Isak for six years - but is now packing his bags at Anfield just eight months later.

Liverpool pulled the trigger on the Dutchman a year after winning the Premier League title. Despite spending £450million on new arrivals, the Reds struggled to adjust, scraping into the Champions League spots on the final day.

Isak - costing a British record £125million - was supposed to be the crowning jewel of Liverpool’s summer recruitment. However, the Swede’s debut campaign proved disastrous and ravaged by injury.

Alexander Isak woes

His refusal to train throughout the summer meant he was not match-fit for the season ahead. Just three Premier League goals - and four in all competitions - has done little to justify his staggering price tag.

Isak suffered five muscle injuries during his three-year spell at St James’ Park. Newcastle fans tried to warn Liverpool when the transfer saga reached a deadlock last summer.

For context, since joining the Reds, Isak has suffered four muscle injuries and a broken leg. A meagre four goals across all competitions pales in comparison to the 27 he netted in black-and-white stripes last year.

Arne Slot comments backfire

As the most toxic transfer saga of 2025 drew to a close, Slot told supporters not to be concerned over his fitness as Isak will be on Merseyside for six years. That remains up in the air, but one thing is certain - his reign as manager has come to an abrupt end.

“He (Isak) missed three or four months of team sessions,” Slot told reporters. “Now we have to build him up gradually with us playing so many games and (having) very little training time.

“So that’s going to be a challenge but we’ve signed him not only for the upcoming two weeks, we’ve signed him for six years so this is what we have to keep in mind and what the fans have to keep in mind if I take him off at a certain moment or I only bring him in for a small amount of minutes. That’s all for the long-term fitness of the player.”

Liverpool released a statement this afternoon confirming Slot’s exit with immediate effect. The announcement read: “That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and - most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves - successful.

“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
