Manchester United are set to go all guns blazing in the summer transfer window
Manchester United finished their season on a real high, securing Champions League football by comfortably finishing third in the Premier League. Michael Carrick managed to transform the struggling side once he replaced Ruben Amorim back in January, and will be eager to push on in the summer transfer window after landing the top job on a permanent basis.
The Red Devils recruited well last summer, bringing in the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko to sharpen their attacking threat. Despite spending around £230m on new talent, there’s still plenty of improvement to be made, and further heavy investment is expected now United’s return to UEFA’s top competition has been secured.
It’s set to be an intriguing summer transfer window across the board for Premier League clubs, as they rush to get deals done in principle ahead of the World Cup, which gets underway in North America next month. With elite players set to be fully focused on the competition, sides are looking to move early to sign them before they jet off.
The transfer rumour mill has been whirring at some pace since the end of the season, with Man United in particular taking up their fair share of the gossip columns. As director of football Jason Wilcox prepares to whip out the chequebook, we’ve taken a look at six top quality signings Manchester United could make this summer.
Six top class signings Man United could make this summer - Ederson to Leao
Ederson - Atalanta: This deal going through now looks to be a formality. The tough-tackling, all-energy Brazilian is set to become United’s first signing on the summer, heading to Old Trafford for a fee believed to be in the region of £35m. He’s become renowned as a ball-winning machine in Serie A, drawing comparisons to Premier League icon N’Golo Kante.
Similar claims were made of Manuel Ugarte before he joined United from Paris Saint-Germain, of course, and it may well take time for Ederson to bed into the Premier League. He’s been with Atalanta for the past four seasons, playing a crucial role in their Europa League winning campaign back in 2023/24. United fans will get a closer look at him before he joins, when he stars on the world stage with Brazil later this month.
Sandro Tonali - Newcastle United: The Magpies are another club set for a refresh, with the Carabao Cup win appearing to be the most the original post-takeover crop of signings are able to accomplish. Their £55m signing Tonali is widely expected to leave St. James’ Park this window, and United have been linked with a stunning £90m move for the Italy international.
Whether the Red Devils would stump up such a whopping fee remains to be seen. It’s worth noting that United have also been linked with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, while hopes of signing Elliot Anderson looking to be fading, with the Nottingham Forest and England star looking increasingly likely to join Manchester City instead.
Rafael Leao - AC Milan: It’s not just the central midfield areas United are looking to improve this summer - they’re after some attacking talent too. Leao has been linked with a move to England for some time, and it looks like the upcoming window could finally see it happen. Recent reports suggest United are keen, with a £43m price tag said to be in place.
There doesn’t look to be a way back for Marcus Rashford, so Leao could bring some fresh energy down the left flank for Carrick’s side instead. He could also be used as a central attacking option, offering some fierce competition for Sesko’s starting spot. The Portugal international has scored nine Serie A goals this season, and provided three assists.
Six top class signings Man United could make this summer - Bremer to Bowen
Gleison Bremer - Juventus: Carrick may also attemptf to strengthen his defence, and could look to sign another Brazilian in the shape of the Juventus powerhouse. The 29-year-old has been tipped for a move to United in recent weeks, although they could face stiff competition from the likes of Bayern Munich for his services.
Bremer made Serie A’s Team of the Season three years in a row between 2021 and 2024, but has struggled with injury problems of late. Still, United could do with the experience, and a £50m move for the ex-Torino gem could be a fine investment if he’s able to stay fit. He’d slot straight in next to Lisandro Martinez in United’s back line.
Morgan Rogers - Aston Villa: The race for Rogers is expected to be a competitive one, with Thomas Tuchel’s favoured England number ten turning heads in the Premier League for the past couple of seasons. He’s been linked with United, but Chelsea and Arsenal are also said to hold a keen interest in the 23-year-old sensation, whose asking price could be over £100m.
However, given that the Villans will be playing Champions League football next season and are said to have set such a huge asking price, we have a feeling Rogers will remain at the club for one more campaign. United arguably need to strengthen elsewhere, as they already boast both Mbeumo and Cunha in attacking areas.
Jarrod Bowen - West Ham United: The Hammers skipper looks set to leave the club following their brutal final-day relegation to the Championship. West Ham will be desperate to cling onto their talisman, but they also need to raise funds, and he would likely command a decent transfer fee with a number of Premier League clubs taking an interest.
United are thought to be in the mix, along with Liverpool and Chelsea. He’ll be fresh and raring to go after the summer, given that he hasn’t made England’s controversial World Cup squad. Capable of playing on the right wing or in a more central role, Bowen would certainly give United more depth in their squad, as they look to challenge in four competitions next season.
