Anthony Gordon completed his big-money exit from Newcastle United to Barcelona on Friday.
Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson has wished Anthony Gordon well after he completed a £70million move to Barcelona.
Less than a week after the Premier League season concluded, the England international left the Magpies in swift fashion. Toon chiefs agreed a fee with the Catalans - with both eager to complete a deal before the World Cup.
A fee was agreed on Wednesday and Gordon jetted off to Barcelona the following morning. Barca decided to wait until late on Friday evening to announce the deal and Newcastle are now tasked with spending the money wisely to replace the England international.
Ross Wilson on Anthony Gordon exit
After the transfer was announced, Newcastle sporting director Wilson admitted that several clubs were chasing Gordon’s signature. However, the Scot suggested that Gordon left the Magpies on good terms.
"Anthony has been a fantastic professional during his time at Newcastle United,” he said. “The relationship between him and the club, particularly with Eddie and our players and staff, has been excellent throughout.
"Anthony has shown real growth and development in his game. That is a reflection of both the environment we strive to create for our players and, importantly, Anthony's own commitment to improving every day.
"There has been interest in Anthony from a number of Europe's leading clubs over a period of time, and the conversations involving the club, led by David Hopkinson and myself, as well as Anthony's representatives, have been conducted confidentially and with a great deal of professionalism on all sides.
"I've enjoyed getting to know Anthony and enjoyed our relationship together. We thank him for his contribution and wish him and his family all the very best for the future. They will always be welcome back at St James' Park."
