Marcus Rashford feelings made clear after Anthony Gordon’s £70m Newcastle United exit

Newcastle United selling Anthony Gordon has placed Marcus Rashford’s career in limbo.

Marcus Rashford reportedly still wants to rejoin Barcelona despite Anthony Gordon’s recent arrival.

Newcastle United confirmed on Friday that Gordon had left for a fee worth £70million plus add-ons. Eddie Howe had left the winger on the sidelines for the final six weeks of the season.

He spent three-and-a-half years at St James’ Park, helping the Magpies secure two Champions League qualifications and the Carabao Cup. Gordon now gets the chance to prove he belongs at the elite table as a Barca player.

Marcus Rashford stance

Many expected Barcelona to withdraw their interest in Rashford, who plays the same position as Gordon. The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at the Camp Nou - scoring 14 goals - including a brace against Newcastle in September.

Barca can activate a £26million to make the switch permanent from Manchester United. However, a major stumbling block is his staggering £325,000-a-week pay packet.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claim Rashford is eager to rejoin Barcelona - who are now chasing Julian Alvarez - and does not want to return to Old Trafford. Should that happen, Gordon will be competing for a starting berth with Rashford at club and international level.

Anthony Gordon’s journey at Newcastle United

Newcastle paid £40million to sign Gordon from Everton in January 2023 - plus an additional £5million in add-ons. He endured a testing start, admitting that he was not suited to Eddie Howe’s rigorous training methods.

However, Gordon enjoyed his best season in professional football the following year, registering 28 goal contributions across all competitions to be crowned the club’s player of the season. His finest hour came in the Carabao Cup semi-final legs against Arsenal, scoring home and away to help Newcastle reach the Wembley showdown.

He was suspended for the final and, in truth, Gordon never recaptured the same form despite becoming a regular England international. The 25-year-old leaves the Magpies with 39 goals and 28 assists in 152 appearances, with the Nou camp giving him the perfect stage to showcase his world-class credentials.
