Manchester United youngster could receive an unexpected World Cup call-up

Man Utd youngster Tyler Fletcher could unexpectedly go to the World Cup after a late injury in Scotland's squad.

Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher is under consideration to be drafted into Scotland's squad for the World Cup. Fletcher made his senior debut for Scotland in a friendly against Curacao on Saturday, a game in which Billy Gilmour picked up an injury in the first half.

Napoli midfielder Gilmour is a key player for Scotland, but he has now been ruled out of featuring at the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in his nation's final match on home soil before the tournament.

The Scotland squad are scheduled to fly to the United States today, and manager Steve Clarke must decide who comes into the squad to replace the injured Gilmour.

Fletcher, Rangers' midfielder Conor Barron, Andy Irving of Sparta Prague and Udinese player Lennon Miller are all under consideration to receive a late call-up to the tournament, which will begin on June 11.

Speaking after the Curacao game, Scotland boss Clarke explained: "Those three are on standby, and obviously Tyler joined us this week. He's trained well this week, so he's a little bit closer than the other three, but I'd need to have a big discussion with my staff and decide the best way to go."

Fletcher's rise in United's academy and through Scotland's youth teams has attracted attention north of the border, as he is the son of Darren Fletcher, who made 80 caps for Scotland during his international career.

The former midfielder, who now manages United's Under-18s team, is the father of twins Tyler and Jack, but the latter has represented England's youth teams.

Tyler Fletcher was given minutes against Brighton by Michael Carrick on the final day of the Premier League season. The youngster made his debut against Tottenham in February, and was named in several matchday squads.

Fletcher picked up the Denzil Haroun Player of the Year Award this season, previously won by the likes of Nicky Butt, Michael Keane, Adnan Januzaj, Axel Tuanzebe and Alvaro Fernandez.

Scotland will begin their World Cup campaign against Haiti on June 14. They are also in a group with Brazil and Morocco.
