West Ham United women suffered a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their second Group 2 fixture at the World Sevens Football tournament on Friday afternoon.
After an entertaining opening match against Manchester United, the Hammers returned to the Gtech Community Stadium looking to get points on the board, but were ultimately undone by a clinical Spurs side.
The fast-paced seven-a-side format ensured chances came at both ends from the outset, with Tottenham settling quickest and taking the lead early on. West Ham responded positively, showing attacking intent and creating opportunities of their own, but Spurs remained dangerous on the counter-attack and doubled their advantage before the break.
Rita Guarino's side emerged for the second half determined to mount a comeback and were rewarded when they pulled a goal back, giving the Hammers renewed belief. With momentum briefly swinging in West Ham's favour, the east Londoners pushed forward in search of another.
However, Tottenham capitalised on the spaces left behind and restored their two-goal cushion before adding a fourth late on to secure victory in convincing fashion.
Despite the disappointing result, the Hammers continued to show flashes of quality throughout the contest, competing well against strong opposition in the unique and demanding World Sevens format.
The defeat leaves West Ham with work to do in Group 2, but the experience gained from facing top-level opposition will provide valuable lessons as the squad continues to adapt to the tournament's high-intensity environment.
