Carrick could have found his midfield gem after stunning international breakthrough

Manchester United wonderkid Tyler Fletcher has received a dramatic last-minute call-up to the Scotland squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The United starlet will replace Billy Gilmour in the 26-man squad after the Napoli midfielder suffered a knee injury during Scotland’s 4-1 friendly win over Curacao.

Fletcher only made his senior Scotland debut on Saturday, but his impressive display immediately caught the attention of head coach Steve Clarke.

The call-up represents a hugely emotional and proud moment for the Fletcher family, whose connection with Man United runs deep.

Tyler and Jack Fletcher are the sons of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who currently serves as the Under-18 head coach at Old Trafford.

While Jack has represented England at youth level, Tyler has followed in his father’s footsteps by committing his international future to Scotland.

It has been a dream 2025-26 season for the young midfielder.

He outgrew the Under-18 level and quickly proved he could comfortably handle the demands of U21 level.

His outstanding performances eventually earned him a senior Man United debut against Tottenham Hotspur back in February.

He also made another first-team appearance after coming off the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion in the final game of the campaign.

He deservedly won the club’s Denzil Haroun Reserve-Team Player of the Year award.

The World Cup now presents a gigantic opportunity for the teenager to showcase his talent on the grandest stage in world football.

Man United are already planning a major midfield rebuild this summer under manager Michael Carrick.

If Fletcher manages to impress during the tournament, Carrick could seriously consider promoting him permanently to the first-team squad next season.

Scotland have been placed in a difficult Group C alongside Haiti, Morocco and tournament giants Brazil.

With Brazil widely expected to dominate the group, Steve Clarke’s side will desperately hope to shock Morocco and secure qualification to the next round.
