Wayne Rooney laughed off a dig at his hairline from David Moyes as he recalled being “stitched up” as a teenager at Everton.

The former striker reflected on having to make a makeshift bandana from a pillow case while on his second ever pre-season tour after having his head shaved.

The pillow case stunt was an attempt to hide his new look from manager Moyes but, he said on his BBC show, it did not work - and Moyes was not impressed.

While talking with Moyes - a guest on his Wayne Rooney Show - Rooney looked back on a summer camp in Switzerland with the first team when he was just 17-years-old.

He said: “Thomas Gravesen and Lee Carsley stitched me up. I think it was in my second pre-season… I bic’d my head.

“It was in Switzerland, it was like 100 degrees, so I ended up having to cut the pillow case up and make a bandana. I’m 17, I’m going out to training with a bandana on my head and I remember [Moyes] looking at me and going [shakes his head].

“I’m walking out and Tommy Gravesen and Lee Carsley are going: ‘Yeah, the gaffer will be fine.’ And I’m walking out with this bandana which I’ve put on and I remember him looking at me… I just took it off.”

Moyes responded: “What Wayne would do to get back to those days when he was getting his hair shaved off.” The Everton boss then revealed Carsley and Gravesen played a role in head coach Jimmy Lumsden ending up with a similar haircut to Rooney.
