Ex-Blackpool, Stoke City and Liverpool midfielder shares coaching ambitions as he opens up on…

Former Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam discusses his coaching ambitions.

Blackpool legend Charlie Adam admits he’s always looking to step back into a first-team coaching environment having pursued a career in the dugout since hanging up his boots.

The former Scotland international enjoyed just under two decades as a senior footballer, representing the likes of Rangers, Liverpool and Stoke City along the way.

One of his most memorable stints came in Tangerine with the Seasiders, with his time on the Fylde Coast coinciding with the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

In 98 appearances, he provided 22 assists and scored 34 goals - including a strike against Cardiff City in the 2010 Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Adam’s first taste of senior management came just down the road with Fleetwood Town between 2023 and 2024, while currently he is an academy coach with Burnley.

“I’m happy in the environment I’m in, learning and developing, but I’ve always got an eye on that first-team environment that I want to get back into,” he said.

“I want to lead again and be a coach that can make something different whether that’s as a first-team coach, an assistant or going on my own as a number one.

“I’m open to all sorts of ideas and any opportunities that come around. I always believe you learn and develop from whoever you work around.

“I’m waiting to see where it goes, but I’m at a very good club where I have a good relationship with a lot of people, so we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Currently at Bloomfield Road, Adam’s old teammate Ian Evatt is Blackpool head coach, with several other ex-Seasiders figures forming the 44-year-old’s backroom staff.

“I’m delighted for the lads,” he stated.

“Ultimately Evo is the manager, but you need good staff around you and they support him very well.

“I think he’ll try to do things a little bit differently. The good thing is, he’s got experience of being in the club for a few months now, and understands what it needs.

“There were far too many injuries last year to be competitive to the level they want to be.

“The owner invested heavily last summer, but at one point it didn’t look great. They made the change, and Evo managed to get the team up and running. Through a lot of difficult moments, they stuck together and got the results in the last few weeks of the season to stay up - now they’ve got to build on that.”
