Liverpool are one of many elite clubs across Europe looking into a deal to sign Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill, according to CaughtOffside.
It had been suggested for many weeks that Liverpool were likely to stick with Arne Slot as manager next season despite a disappointing season in the Premier League and Champions League, but they made the decision to sack the Dutchman on Saturday.
Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to take over from Slot at Anfield following his own exit from Bournemouth, with his contract expiring at the end of this month.
The Spaniard has been on the shortlist of a number of big clubs following an outstanding spell in charge of the Cherries, whom he led to Europa League football this term as they finished one spot and three points behind the Merseysiders in the standings.
Talks are expected this week between Liverpool and Iraola and his representatives over a deal that will see him appointed as Slot's successor.
If the 43-year-old's hire is confirmed, work will begin immediately off the pitch to ensure that the Spaniard has a strong squad to work with next season as he looks to make the Reds Premier League title contenders again.
Liverpool Eyeing Move for Marc Pubill
Marc Pubill
According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are one of five huge European clubs monitoring Marc Pubill's future at Atletico.
Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in the Premier League, while there is also interest from Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.
Pubill has made a big impact for Atletico following a 2025 move from Almeria, showing he is capable of playing as both a full-back and a centre-back, as he continues to develop under the leadership of Diego Simeone.
That versatility has caught the attention of some of Europe's biggest clubs, although Atletico see him as a key player and he is protected by a release clause worth around €500m.
Liverpool Could Kill Two Birds With One Stone With Pubill
Alisson Konate Van Dijk
While Liverpool are ready to make additions to their frontline this summer following the exit of Mohamed Salah, with the club said to be discussing personal terms with RB Leizpig winger Yan Diomande, they will be looking at their defence too.
The right-back position was an issue for Slot throughout the 2025-26 season following injury issues for Conor Bradley after the exit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, which meant that Dominik Szoboszlai was forced to deputise at right-back on many occasions.
In addition, the Reds look like they will be short of depth in the centre-back position too, after Ibrahima Konate's exit at the expiry of his contract was confirmed by the club on Sunday.
The Frenchman will leave a big void after the partnership he has struck up with Virgil van Dijk in recent seasons, although Jeremy Jacquet is already arriving in the position this summer.
Still, Joe Gomez's future isn't guaranteed and Van Dijk is getting no younger, so another centre-back option may be needed.
Given he has proven he can play at right-back and centre-back for Atletico this season, Pubill could be the answer to bolstering both positions.
