Newcastle United winger signs off successful loan spell with 4-1 defeat to Racing Santander

Teenage winger Antonio Cordero has signed off his loan spell at Cadiz with a 4-1 defeat.

However, the 19-year-old can be well pleased with his second half of the season back in the Spanish second tier.

Antonio Cordero has made 21 league appearances for Cadiz including 16 starts and on Sunday he played the full match as they lost to Racing Santander, who go up to La Liga as champions.

Ahead of Sunday, Antonio Cordero had scored three goals in his last four appearances and the third of those goals helped Cadiz to win their penultimate match of the season to ensure they couldn’t be relegated.

Ahead of joining Newcastle United last summer (2025), Antonio Cordero was seen as one of the best emerging young talents in Spain and attracting interest from many clubs, Cordero managed 13 direct goal involvements for Malaga in the Spanish second tier in the 2024/25 season, scoring six and getting seven assists.

After signing for United, the then 18-year-old sent to Belgian top tier club Westerlo for the 2025/26 season to get some regular first team football to help his progression.

However, the teenage winger’s move to Belgium proved a disaster. As in so many other cases where young NUFC players go out on loan to get plenty of first team football…but then don’t, in the first half of the 2025/26 season Antonito Cordero not given a single league start by Westerlo and instead only 87 minutes in seven brief appearances from the bench.

A lot of Newcastle fans pointing the finger at Shola Ameobi, who since 2019 has been the Loan Coordinator/Manager at NUFC, overseeing young players sent out on loan.

All parties agreeing to cut short that doomed loan spell, Antonio Cordero then announced as going on loan to Cadiz on 31 December 2025.

Great to see him getting regular football and finishing so strongly in the later stages of the season, hopefully he can now use that as a springboard to further progression in his fledgling career.

I assume Antonio Cordero will be given a chance to train with the first team squad when the Newcastle United players begin first team pre-season preparations on Monday 13 July 2026. A chance for Eddie Howe and his coaching staff to have a look at the winger before deciding what will happen next season.
