Newcastle United have offered Fabian Schar a new deal and hope to announce a "positive" outcome this week on his future.
Both Schar and head coach Eddie Howe expressed a desire for the ex-Swiss international to stay on at St James' Park and with the finishing touches being put to an extension, he should be in a position to start preparations for the 2026/27 season with Newcastle.
Having lost both Emil Krafth and Kieran Trippier, Howe was keen to retain Schar's experience, and it is believed that the 34-year-old wants to end his career at United.
Howe had said at the end of the season: "I've had a few discussions with Fabby. It is now with Ross Wilson and his agent and we hope to come to a successful conclusion.
"We want Fabian to stay. We feel he has a lot to offer. He’s been unbelievable for us. Fingers crossed, we want Fabian to stay. He has got a lot to offer and we have missed him.
"We have missed his distribution and missed his passing from deep has been a big miss for us, the way it accelerates our attacks.
"We would not be keeping anybody that we didn't feel could help the team. I think Fabian has been unbelievable for us. I still feel he has a lot to offer."
Schar has waited patiently for a new deal after getting through some injury woes after a January ankle injury.
But he has stated he wanted to stay since last autumn, Schar told Chronicle Live exclusively last season: "I have said before I feel at home here. I know in football, you never know what happens, and it goes quickly.
"If that's something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course."
Schar has been an incredible pound-for-pound value after a £3million arrival from Deportivo de La Coruña in 2018 during the Rafa Benitez era. But Howe has leaned heavily towards his experience and quality at the back with the defender playing a major part in two Champions League qualifications.
Schar has made 21 appearances this season after picking up an injury against Leeds United when he suffered an ankle injury. Since then, an infection resulted in a setback, and he has missed out on the season finale.
