Lazio Rekindle Interest in Fringe Brighton Defender

Lazio are reportedly considering a move for Brighton centre-back Diego Coppola, a profile appreciated by Gennaro Gattuso.

Lazio Seeking Defensive Reinforcement

The Aquile need to sign at least one new central defender this summer, as Alessio Romagnoli is waiting for Al-Sadd to submit a new offer following their January onslaught, while Mario Gila would be sold if he were to attract a lucrative offer, given that his contract will expire in June 2027. Samuel Gigot and Patric are also running on short-term deals.

Lazio Interested in Diego Coppola

A recent report from La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Lazio have already secured the services of Dinamo Zagreb’s Sergi Dominguez, but this has yet to be confirmed by other sources. Instead, La Repubblica (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) expects the club to rekindle their interest in Coppola.

The 22-year-old is a Hellas Verona youth product who became a member of the first team in 2022 and went on to cement himself as a key player at the club. The Biancocelesti were interested in the Bussolengo native last summer, but they weren’t able to act due to the transfer ban.

Coppola Struggled for Playing Time at Brighton

Coppola ended up joining Brighton on a deal worth €11 million. However, the Italian defender couldn’t lock down a starting role at his new club. He only made five appearances in the Premier League, in addition to one in the FA Cup and three in the Carabao Cup.

Paris FC Loan & Gattuso Link

The Seagulls sent the defender on loan to Paris FC in January, where he played alongside his compatriot and Lazio legend Ciro Immobile. He made 13 appearances in Ligue 1, contributing with two assists.

However, Coppola will return to Brighton, as he remains tied to the English club with a contract valid until 2030. Lazio could thus try to bring him back to Serie A with Gennaro Gattuso’s blessing. Although he never played him, the incoming Biancocelesti head coach used to call up the young centre-back during his tenure at the helm of the Italian national team.
