West Ham United were linked with Elizer Mayenda last summer.

With a season of Championship football ahead, and hopefully no more than that, the Hammers have a lot of work to do in preparation this summer.

Several players will move on, and a whole host of players will move to the London Stadium, but the deals will have to be right if they are to avoid falling into the trap.

Mayenda was linked with West Ham last summer, as was Chris Rigg, though the latter will have a crucial role to play for the Black Cats given their Europa League qualification and his homegrown status.

However, Mayenda’s role at Sunderland could open the door for West Ham to make a move.

Eliezer Mayenda exit could be on the cards

Mayenda is a fan favourite at Sunderland, as showcased by one of the greatest chants in the Premier League over the last few years.

However, the arrival of Brian Brobbey in particular has restricted the gametime he has access to at the Stadium of Light, with his opening day start against the Hammers proving to be one of only eight throughout the campaign.

The Spaniard was seen with Sunderland supporters by himself ahead of their lap of appreciation last weekend, with his agent also hinting at his exit via Instagram.

Given his age and the way he has come on since joining the club, Sunderland may well want to keep him long-term, opening the door for a loan move.

And if that were to happen, West Ham must pounce.

What would Mayenda bring to West Ham?

The Hammers need to sign proven Championship players with the potential to make the jump to the Premier League if they were promoted, and Mayenda fits the bill.

He showcased his talent in the Championship last season, where he managed 13 goal involvements in just 22 starts, in what was his first real season in senior football.

Only 2.4 per cent of forwards averaged more dribbles per 90 than the Spaniard, who also ranked among the top 15 per cent for big chances created per 90.

Mayenda’s versatility would also be key for West Ham, leaving them with no need for thought if a chance for a deal opens up
