There is no-one alive more important in the history of Newcastle United than Kevin Keegan.
He has been variously been described as a saviour, inspiration, messiah, pied-pier and every single one of those descriptions is completely correct. I’d add others - brave, genuine and emotional as well as a leader beloved by the players and the supporters who bought into him completely. Liverpool and Newcastle supporters can argue which club he belongs to the most. It doesn’t matter - he is loved here above any other figure I’ve known while I’ve followed the club over the last fifty-odd years.
Football is a cynical business, filled with many on the take and looking after their own interests. KK is no mug but his connection with the people of Newcastle and the wider city region is because of his emotion and his sincerity. His DNA is north Durham coal mining stock and similar to many of you reading this. His upbringing and background as a working-class lad so much like those who adored him at SJP. He is one of us and a man of the people.
The news in today’s media is a jolt as many felt via his latest public appearences signalled a return to good health.
It is strange to feel so strongly about someone you don’t really know and who doesn’t know you even in this age of celebrity culture. Kevin is far more than a celebrity - his our king and always will be.
That will be evident when Kevin makes his long awaited return to St James’ Park as he has stated he now intends to do. We’ll be there Kevin, Wor Kev!
