Newcastle United are due to announce their retained list soon, with several player names expected to be missing from the squad list.
Kieran Trippier, John Ruddy, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett are a few names we know will not be on the squad sheet for next season after they announced their departures when their respective contracts expire.
There are likely to be a few more players scrubbed from the roster, especially youngsters who haven't quite made the grade.
There is one player who was at one point expected to be heading out of the club, but now looks more likely to stay.
Eddie Howe made no secret of his desire to keep Fabian Schar
Fabian Schar is one of Eddie Howe's favourite players at the club. One of the first things he did when he arrived at St James' Park was to pull Fabian Schar out of the cold and put him back into the team, and the Swiss star has repaid him over and over again.
When Ross Wilson arrived at the club as sporting director and declared it to be his mission to lower the average age of the squad, it suddenly felt like Howe would be overruled on Schar's future and the 34-year-old would be let go.
Eddie Howe has publicly spoken about his wish to keep hold of Schar, while the player himself has gone as far as to say he'd love to end his career at Newcastle.
Lee Ryder has taken to X on Monday to claim that talks have been held recently and things are looking good for a potential extension. Eddie Howe was keen to retain Schar for his experience with the dressing room potentially losing too many of its elder statesmen.
We'll be happy if Schar stays
Fabi may have lost a yard of pace as he's got older, but he's still got a very good footballing brain, and that can often be worth more than speed, so we've got no problems with him being retained.
We don't think he should be an automatic starter anymore, however. There are certain games which are better suited to Schar's skillset, and he will also be a good player to have on the bench to come into games late on to give Newcastle another dimension.
A centre-back with a rocket of a shot can change a game on its head, especially when he's fresh and going up against tired defenders. Fingers crossed, we get confirmation of his new contract soon.
