Coventry City are yet to make their first fresh summer signing since securing their promotion back to the Premier League.
The Sky Blues have Frank Onyeka lined up to upgrade his move from Brentford to a permanent contract in accordance with the terms of his half season loan agreement that he would switch clubs if City secured promotion - a feat they achieved in style by going up as clear champions.
Underpinning that success was goalkeeper Carl Rushworth who, since joining on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, played every minute of the Championship season, achieving a league-high of 17 clean sheets from 46 matches. The 24-year-old has been tipped by Frank Lampard to have an “elite” career in the Premier League and to play for England, and he’d clearly love to have the player on a more permanent basis next season.

Owner Doug King already tried to sign him last summer with a bid for a fee of around £5m-£6m but Albion declined the offer, wanting more in the region of £10m-£12m.
Ten months on and Rushworth is understood to be worth considerably more – somewhere in the region of £15m-£20m.
Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen, 23, is Albion’s current first choice with veteran 35-year-old Jason Steele as understudy, while friendly club rival James Beadle has been out on loan at Birmingham City and, like Rushworth, hotly tipped for a bright future with England.
What do we know?
Rushworth has loved his time at the CBS Arena and is keen to become a permanent signing. Asked if he could see himself with Coventry next season, Rushworth said just a few short months ago: “One hundred percent. I think that it’s a really good opportunity that we have here. Yeah, I’d love to have the opportunity to play in the Premier League with this club.”
The feeling is mutual between the player and the club, and it's no secret that City would love to sign him this summer and the ball is now very much in Coventry's court. The Premier League season finished just over a week ago and the summer transfer window officially opens on June 15 for top flight clubs.
The onus is very much on the Sky Blues to make their official move for Rushworth with a bid that hits the numbers. That figure is likely to be £20million. Initial discussions are understood to have taken place between the two clubs and it's fair to say that Coventry are the front runners to sign the highly-rated player.

The moving parts that could muddy the waters
From Joao Pedro and Alexis Mac Allister to Ben White and Robert Sanchez, Brighton Albion have grown accustomed to developing young talents and selling them to Europe’s biggest clubs ever since returning to the Premier League a decade ago. And many believe Bart Verbruggen will be next, keeping in line with the Seagull’s business plan. Now the Netherlands’ first choice international stopper, a big money move is on the cards.
His form has attracted the attention of leading clubs around Europe, including Bayern Munich and Chelsea. Verbruggen, who joined Brighton for around £15m from Anderlecht in 2023 will also be in the shop window this summer at the World Cup finals.
He's currently valued at around £50m and a move away this summer would leave Brighton searching for a new number one, with Rushworth a ready-made replacement. However, Albion are also understood to be open to a sale, particularly if it means making a considerable profit on the Halifax-born player who joined the Seagulls' development squad from his home town club as a teenager.
Frank Lampard's future is understood to also be a factor. In keeping with his relationship with the majority of his players, Lampard and Rushworth have a healthy respect for each other. Rushworth has clearly further developed his game under the head coach and his staff and has thoroughly enjoyed working under the Chelsea legend.
Lampard continues to be linked with interest from Crystal Palace and a move away could have a bearing on Rushworth's willingness to sign.
What’s Rushworth’s contract situation?
He has two years left on his current deal which means this summer will be pivotal for both the player and his parent club. Albion will want to tie him down to a new and improved long-term deal or cash in. They won’t want to let him go another year and risk him running down his contract or not getting the best deal possible while his stock is so high.
The goalkeeper joined The Amex from Halifax, understood to have turned down the advances of Manchester United and Arsenal to join Brighton’s development squad in the hope of a clearer pathway to first team football.
What's Rushworth said about his future?
Asked how he feels about his long-term future at Brighton, he said earlier this year: “It’s tough to say. I speak to my agent, I speak to Gordon (Greer, loan manager) and I’m trying to focus on the here and now.
“I think it’s definitely a conversation to have, that I want to be a Premier League goalkeeper. I want to have an established career and I want to get there as quick as I can without rushing it, but I do think that I’m ready. I just need the opportunity and I want to take it.”

What's Doug King said about the prospect of a permanent move?
“Obviously we brought him in on loan. I do know Tony Bloom (majority owner and chairman of Brighton) personally as well,” King told BBC CWR recently.
“We did try to buy him (last summer), that wasn’t able to be done at the time.”
He added: “He’s shown himself to be a high quality goalkeeper, and when we lost Oliver (Dovin), we recognised for sure this season particularly we needed a high quality goalkeeper that just adds that assuredness.
“It’s very important, a top quality goalkeeper, just because it pervades out to the team and to the defence if you’re very sure of somebody behind you, and I think we’ve all seen him grow into a fantastic goalkeeper. Now look, you know, never fall in love with a loan player, right?
“Ollie Dovin was going great for us until he did his ACL at Sheffield United. He’s had a tough rehab to get back and he is coming back, which is great to see. He’s the Swedish Under-21 goalkeeper, he’s a great goalkeeper.
"Carl’s come in and it’s been great for him because he hadn’t had much playing time. He went to Hull, got injured, went back, he was pulled back by Brighton, didn’t get a game, a bit frustrated.
“We’ve given him that platform and we’ve given that platform to Brighton as well, that’s what we’ve done for Brighton & Hove Albion, and we’ve allowed one of their goalkeepers to showcase himself in the in the Championship. So they should be pretty happy with the way it’s gone for us and for them.”
Any alternatives?
Any recruitment department worth its salt will have a number of potential options for what will be a hugely significant summer transfer window for City.
The Sun’s transfer specialist Alan Nixon reported in March that Coventry are eyeing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as a potential replacement for Rushworth if he returns to Brighton for good. With the Black Cats having signed Robin Roefs last the summer, Patterson found himself frozen out of the first team and has spent time on loan with Millwall.
Nixon claimed that any deal for Patterson could be permanent or a loan, saying that, “A loan is favourite but a buy around £8 million may also work.”
Conclusion:
There are many moving parts to this situation, not least whether or not Bart Verbruggen is sold in the summer.
Rushworth has already declared his ‘love’ for the Sky Blues but he also has to look after his own career and top of that priority list will be guaranteed first team football in the Premier League next season, allied with maximising his earning potential.
If he’s available to buy he’ll cost City a lot of money (probably £20m) and it remains to be seen whether King would be prepared to shell out that sort of figure.
It's fair to say, however, that given his potential and fact that he's tipped as a future England keeper, it looks a sound investment with the potential for a sizeable re-sale value.
But City have to start moving on the issue with a firm offer because there is, understandably, interest from elsewhere, including Newcastle United, according to the Evening Standard..
What is clear is that as much as King rates Oliver Dovin, the fact that he’s yet to prove himself in the Championship, allied to the fact that he will have been out for getting on for 18 months come the start of next season, means that it would be too much of a risk to start the Swede in the top flight next term.
Over to you Doug!
