Back in January 2026, Newcastle United fans heard the shock news that Kevin Keegan had been diagnosed with cancer.
An official Newcastle United statement revealing: ‘Kevin Keegan was recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment.’
The official statement going on to read: ‘Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this difficult time, the family are requesting privacy, and will be making no further comment.’
Nothing more was then heard, apart from that is some quite disgraceful invented claims online, people making things up simply to try and get attention for their social media channels etc.
Then came the positive news that Kevin Keegan felt well enough to make a public appearance in Newcastle at the Tyne Theatre on Sunday 31 May.
Last night the United legend was in great form as he entertained the Newcastle fans with his usual charismatic delivery.
However, he also revealed some devastating news amongst the laughs and trips down memory lane, the great times we experienced with him as both player and manager.
Kevin Keegan revealing that his diagnosis had been stage four stomach cancer.
Kevin Keegan announcing to the Newcastle United fans who had gathered at the Tyne Theatre: “They said we have a top doctor with a new way of fighting what you have got, which is stage four [stomach] cancer. He was a Liverpool supporter and I went to meet him, I knew I wouldn’t be walking alone if you know what I mean.”
The specialist telling him at the meeting he had a great success rate when tackling the kind of situation Kevin Keegan faced.
Kevin Keegan relating to the audience how the conversation then went: “Fantastic, what is your strike [success] rate?”
The specialist replying: “Thirty-three per cent.”
Kevin Keegan coming back with: “Oh, I thought he might say eighty, maybe ninety, anyway, I’m still here at the moment…’
A quick check online for stage four stomach cancer simply reinforces the challenge Kevin Keegan has and is facing.
He has turned seventy-five since the diagnosis and whilst it was sobering news he delivered last night, at the same time great to see KK in such positive form.
Reality is that none of us know exactly how long we have got and a case of living life to the full in the meantime, which is clearly how Kevin Keegan is approaching it.
For those of us lucky enough to live through the Keegan eras as player and manager (first time around), it is just incredible how the years have flown by. Now coming up to 44 years since he signed for NUFC back in 1982, it was overwhelming at the time, the then England captain prepared to drop into the second tier to breathe new life into an ailing Newcastle United.
Kevin Keegan now with his own personal battle and all Newcastle United fans right behind him, hoping he can beat the odds just like he did so many times as our star player and very special manager.
Newcastle United fans had hoped that Kevin Keegan might play some active role again at the club following the very belated departure of Mike Ashley, or at the very least be back on the pitch at a match to allow fans to show their appreciation at least one more time at St James’ Park.
Kevin Keegan now revealing that he is looking forward to doing so now, KK stating that so long as it is okay with Eddie Howe and it won’t prove too much of a distraction, then he will make at least one more appearance at SJP next season and go on the pitch ahead of a match.
Kevin Keegan declaring: “I want to say goodbye. I didn’t get the chance when I left the club last time.”
King Kev is a true NUFC legend.
As a player he saved us back in 1982, what a brilliant couple of seasons they were, unforgettable.
Then it was beyond incredible when he returned as manager in February 1992 to do the same, what a five years they were.
Kevin Keegan even came back again in January 2008 but even he couldn’t save us from Mike Ashley. The then owner’s treatment of King Kev arguably the worst of the lot from him, which is saying something.
Good luck Kevin Keegan in your fight against cancer and we all look forward now to this appearance at St James’ Park, what a day that will be.
