Newly promoted manager namechecks Sunderland as club model to follow ahead of Premier League…

Newly-promoted Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic has namechecked Sunderland.

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic has namechecked Sunderland as the club and model to follow this summer following their promotion to the Premier League.

City emerged from the chaos of the Championship play-offs to beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the ‘Spygate’ final at Wembley last month. Striker Oli McBurnie scored a £200million tap-in in stoppage time to fire the Tigers back to the top flight after nine years.

Jakirovic, whose side only sneaked into the play-offs in sixth place on the last day, said: “We will try to add better players than we have right now," he told the Yorkshire Post. "This is also our job. I think the main players who brought us to the Premier League can stay. They can help us as well. "We just have to add better players than we have.

"I think Sunderland's recipe is great. They brought dynamic players with the pace and speed. So you can build this type of team.” On Hull’s recruitment plans, he added: “We are on the same page since day one. I don't see any problems there. This is great money for the club. We will try to use this money very wisely."

McBurnie’s goal meant heartbreak for Middlesbrough, the side who came in from the cold after Southampton were thrown out of the play-offs for spying on them.

It also avoided the threat of litigation, this time from Hull, whose owner Acun Ilicali vowed to take legal action if his side were not promoted. His contention was that Hull should have gone up automatically when Saints were expelled, rather than face the team who had lost the semi-finals.
