Newcastle United have announced on Monday afternoon that seven young players will be leaving.
Their contracts coming to an end this summer and not offered new ones.
The club revealing: ‘Newcastle United’s Academy will bid farewell to seven players this summer as their contracts come to an end. Ciaran Thompson and Alfie Harrison, who have both featured in first-team friendlies, are among those set to depart.’
The official release going on to detail: ‘Thompson joined Newcastle’s Academy at the age of 13 and signed his first professional contract in the summer of 2023. He later appeared for the Magpies in a post-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Melbourne in May 2024. Midfielder Harrison arrived from Manchester City in February 2024. He made his first appearance for Eddie Howe’s side during the Magpies’ Sela Cup triumph against Stade Brestois in August 2024, before featuring again against Espanyol and Atlético Madrid in August 2025.’
A tough time of year for so many young players at clubs.
Newcastle United naming the other five set to leave as Adam Harrison, James Taylor, Joe Brayson, Thomas Bryant and Darren Palmer.
However, better news for others, as Newcastle United confirm: ‘All other Under-21 players will remain with the Academy, with options activated to retain Dylan Charlton, Scott Bailey, Johnny Emerson and Luke Craggs.’
Steve Harper is the Newcastle United Academy Director and he added: “I want to extend my thanks to all the players moving on from the Academy this summer. They have all made positive contributions during their time here and they are all well placed to continue their football journey on the back of the platform they’ve built. Our support for each of them will continue as they take their next steps. The Academy remains a resource for them and I look forward to seeing where their journeys take them. On behalf of everyone at the football club, we wish them every success for the future.”
