It is exactly nine months to the day since Liverpool fans celebrated Arne Slot signing Alexander Isak
On 1 September 2025, transfer deadline day, the scousers buying Alexander Isak for £130m, a new record fee paid by a Premier League club.
Who would have predicted the next nine months?
Liverpool fans believing domination both domestically and in Europe was all but a formality and the media lapping it all up in agreement.
Arne Slot had won the Premier League in his first season with the Jurgen Klopp team he inherited. He then spent over £415m in summer 2025, the biggest spending spree by a club in European football history.
Liverpool fans ecstatic and lauding it over the Newcastle United fans who had seen Alexander Isak and his NUFC teammates totally outplay Slot’s team at Wembley to win the Carabao Cup in March 2025.
With Newcastle United still refusing to sell Alexander Isak, Liverpool had fluked a 3-2 win at St James’ Park on 25 August 2025 as the 10 man United team responded magnificently to losing Anthony Gordon to a red card in the first half and going 2-0 down. After the match, Liverpool fan and former star player Jamie Carragher admitted that he had never seen such an extreme of a team losing a match that they absolutely deserved to win, nor a team winning a game that they absolutely deserved to lose.
The day before they signed Alexander Isak, Liverpool won 1-0 against Arsenal in the Premier League at Anfield on 31 August 2025. They went on to extend their opening to the Premier League season to five wins our of five heading into late September 2025.
With Alexander Isak set to get up to speed and add to their talent on the pitch once he got over his summer-long Newcastle United strike, Arne Slot and the club’s fans dreaming of not only winning everything, but doing so with ease.
This is how Liverpool fans reacted on social media in the immediate aftermath of the 1 September 2025 signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £130m:

Who would have predicted that this is where we would be now on 1 June 2026?
The Liverpool fans forcing out Arne Slot only 12 months after that title win and less than nine months after predicting Slot and Alexander Isak were leading them to certain world domination.
After winning all of their first five Premier League matches of the 2025/26 season, Liverpool only won 12 of the remaining 33. They were hammered 3-0 at Anfield by Crystal Palace to exit the League Cup, hammered 4-0 by Man City when knocked out of the FA Cup, smashed 4-0 on aggregate by PSG in the Champions League.
