Manchester United are working on a double midfield transfer involving Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Atalanta’s Ederson, in a move that could directly affect Newcastle United’s summer plans.
Tonali’s future has been the subject of growing speculation after Newcastle missed out on European qualification, with several major clubs linked to the Italy international.
According to [Sky Sport](https://sport.sky.it/calciomercato/2026/05/21/tonali-ederson-manchester-united-calciomercato-news), Manchester United are now pushing for two midfield additions after returning to the Champions League under the guidance of long-time Red Devils icon and freshly-extended manager Michael Carrick.
“Manchester United has two midfield targets,” Sky Sport reported. “The English club—which will return to the Champions League next season—is looking to strengthen its squad with Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Atalanta’s Ederson.”
United appear close to landing Ederson first, with the Atalanta midfielder also previously linked with Newcastle. That said, the report states that the Mancunians believe both deals are possible.
“Management is confident they can complete both deals in the upcoming summer transfer window,” Sky Sport reported.
Newcastle, meanwhile, was credited with at least some interest in an Ederson transfer, but that appears difficult now with Man Utd on the verge of completing their own deal.
The bigger concern for the Magpies is Tonali, obviously, who remains one of their highest-value players and could become another headache after the Alexander Isak saga from last summer.
“Tonali, on the other hand, would remain in the Premier League, where he arrived from AC Milan in the summer of 2023,” Sky Sport wrote about his potential move to Manchester. “In his third season with the Magpies, Tonali has missed just four games between the league and cup competitions.”
Newcastle have previously been reported to be open to selling any player in their roster, although they are sure to want a major fee for Tonali, which is something the Red Devils might not be willing to put on the table.
