Newcastle United get Real Madrid transfer green light as several major deals lined up -…

Newcastle United news and transfers: Our Newcastle United writing team have answered the big questions surrounding the club this week.

It’s been a busy week for Newcastle United on the transfer and commercial front.

The Magpies have confirmed Ewen Jaouen as their first summer signing from Stade de Reims while also releasing a divisive 2026/27 Adidas home shirt without a main sponsor.

The club are also pushing to sign Spanish winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna, with more signings expected.

Your Shields Gazette sports editor, Dominic Scurr, is here to answer the burningquestions surrounding the club.

What have you made of NUFC's transfer business so far?

DS: So far the signs are positive. Lessons have been learned from last summer and, with a sporting director in place, things are getting done.

Everyone expected Anthony Gordon to leave this summer but the club were able to avoid an Alexander Isak like transfer saga by agreeing a £70million fee with Barcelona quickly. All in all, it’s a good piece of business for a player who contributed three open play goals in the Premier League last season.

The club’s active pursuit of Victor Munoz shows they are moving quickly to bring in a Gordon replacement.

It also shows the club are shopping in a different market too, with greater value to be found on the continent. The Matheus Cunha, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and James Trafford links from last year suggested the club had a strong domestic focus early last summer.

This year they have cast their net further afield and the signing of 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen looks like it could be a smart piece of business in time. I’d expect him to be a number two goalkeeper option initially, but he certainly looks one for the future.

What is the latest on Victor Munoz?

DS: Our understanding is that Newcastle are confident this deal is one they can do. Real Madrid, who hold 50% of Munoz’s economic rights as well as a buy-back option, will not stand in Newcastle’s way as they will happily bank the £15million or so transfer fee in addition to the £5million they received from Osasuna last summer.

This one looks like it will happen.

What is next for Newcastle in the transfer market?

DS: Hopefully Newcastle can get the Munoz deal sorted before looking at a few more potentially problematic positions. In terms of incomings, a right-back is a must after the exits of Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth paired with the uncertainty over Tino Livramento’s long-term future.

A third-choice goalkeeper will also likely join on a free transfer while other incomings would be dependent on outgoings. The club are willing to listen to offers for Nick Pope this summer, as revealed by The Gazette last week.

Pope had a deal lined up to join Ipswich Town but Kieran McKenna’s situation ultimately put that move on hold. Leeds United also hold an interest in the 10-time England international while Hull City is another name doing the rounds.

Should Pope leave, Newcastle would look to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper. Newcastle hold an interest in James Trafford and will explore a deal, but there’s also a chance they would look at an older, cheaper alternative if the finances don’t stack up.

What are your thoughts on the new home kit?

DS: The barcode design is jarring; it’s not a Newcastle kit. But having seen it up close in person, it’s not as bad as the leaked images had me fearing.

The authentic version is actually verging on decent in my opinion. But what isn’t decent is the £120 price tag required for supporters to get their hands on one. It’s simply extortionate and a big problem in football nowadays, but that could be another article in itself!

Why doesn't it have a sponsor?

DS: Newcastle’s £25million-a-season deal with Sela came to an end this summer and the general uncertainty on the commercial front in the Premier League, in addition to the ban on betting sponsors, has created a difficult market when it comes to front of shirt sponsors.

Newcastle are one of many clubs not to have announced a front of shirt sponsor this summer, while several others are understood to have agreed cut-price deals just to ensure they have something in place.

That being said, we understand Newcastle have a front-of-shirt sponsor lined up and it will be in place ahead of the new season. More will be revealed soon.

Who are you backing to win the World Cup?

DS: I’d back Spain to win. Any team that can win the Euros with Ayoze Perez and Joselu should have no problem winning the World Cup! Could Victor Munoz join the very small club of Newcastle United World Cup winners? And you name the others?
