Celtic Eye Ex-Real Madrid Striker

Celtic have been credited with an interest in Alvaro Rodriguez as the club continue to assess forward options this summer.

The 21-year-old Elche striker has emerged as a name to watch after reports in Italy claimed several clubs across Europe are monitoring his situation.

TuttoMercatoWeb journalist Pietro Celeste has reported that Bologna are evaluating Rodriguez, with Celtic, Bournemouth, Ajax and Feyenoord also mentioned in connection with the forward.

For Celtic, the profile is what makes the link interesting.

Rodriguez is not another small, mobile attacker who drifts across the front line. He is a 6ft 4in centre-forward who would give the Hoops a very different option through the middle.

That is something Celtic have lacked at times.

Celtic have plenty of pace, energy and movement in the final third, but there have been matches where a stronger presence in the box may have made a difference. Rodriguez would offer height, power and a clear target through the middle if Celtic wanted that style of striker.

He also comes with a strong football education.

Rodriguez came through Real Madrid’s system, played for Castilla and made senior appearances for the Spanish giants before moving on. That background alone will attract attention, even if he is still at the stage of his career where regular football matters more than reputation.

Last season at Elche, he returned seven goals and five assists across 34 appearances.

Those numbers are not explosive, but they are enough to suggest a young striker still developing and contributing in different ways.

There is also a complication in any potential deal.

Real Madrid still hold 50 per cent of his rights after selling him to Elche, meaning any transfer would not be entirely straightforward. That kind of clause can affect valuations, negotiations and how quickly a deal can be done.

The competition also tells its own story.

Ajax and Feyenoord have strong records of developing young talent, Bologna offer a route into Serie A, and Bournemouth bring Premier League money to the table. If Celtic are genuinely interested, they would not be alone.

That is why this should be treated carefully for now.

There is no suggestion at this stage that Celtic have made a bid or opened advanced talks. The claim is one of interest, and at this time of year, plenty of names will be assessed before anything moves.

Still, Rodriguez would be an eye-catching option.

A young former Real Madrid striker, standing 6ft 4in and looking for the next step in his career, is always going to draw attention.

For Celtic, the real question is whether they are simply being linked with another promising forward, or whether Martin O’Neill wants a striker who can give his attack a completely different dimension.
