Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Ibrahima Konate as a free agent, following the defender's exit from Liverpool at the end of his contract.

A statement from the club reads: "Real Madrid CF and Ibrahima Konaté have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons, until June 30, 2030."

The Reds failed to seal an agreement over an extension for the Frenchman, despite being locked in productive talks that appeared to move close to a renewal earlier this year.

Liverpool announced the exit at the end of last month, confirming that the 27-year-old would be moving on after spending five years in Merseyside.

Real Madrid's interest in Konate was an open secret, with the club's president, Florentino Perez, going on to claim that the defender would sign if he won the elections earlier this month.

The pieces still had to fall into place, but after winning the re-election campaign, the move for the centre-back was wrapped up, as he joins Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries as summer arrivals during a busy summer rebuild for Los Blancos.

There is also a reunion with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the cards, one year on from the former Liverpool star making the move to the Bernabeu, which was met with some frustration from the Anfield faithful.

Konate and Alexander-Arnold have played alongside each other 93 times in their career so far, with 59 wins, 20 draws and just 14 defeats to their name in that time.

It remains to be seen just how much game time the former Liverpool duo will get between them, especially for Alexander-Arnold, following the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager, as well as the signing of Dumfries at right-back.

As for Konate, there is another reunion on the cards with Kylian Mbappe, his France international teammate, as the pair will represent both club and country.

"Konate is a very aggressive defender, in the best sense," the Real Madrid striker recently said of his new teammate in a France press conference.

"Never a bad move, he's tough in his marking, he wants his opponent to feel like they're going to have a rough night. I love defenders like him on my team."

It remains to be seen just how well Konate will settle into life at the Bernabeu, but there is a huge task in the World Cup ahead of him and Les Bleus before then.

France won their opening game of the tournament against Senegal, where he was an unused substitute, while clashes with Iraq and Norway await in the rest of the group stage.
