World Cup while you were sleeping: David hat trick for Canada downs Qatar as Mexico qualify for knockouts

Canada 6 - 0 Qatar

Now it was only an 11pm kick-off but were you really going to stay up and watch a Qatari side we have seen way too much of as Ireland fans? Well, if you headed to be before midnight you missed out on seeing Canada win their very first World Cup match.

They did so against a Qatari side who fell apart – having to play with nine men from just eight minutes into the second half.

Cyle Larin got the goal scoring going in Vancouver after 16 minutes and Jonathan David scored twice to give them a three goal lead at the break. By then Homam Al-Amin had got a red card and Assim Madibo joined him in the dressing room early in the second half.

A Saliba strike, an OG and David’s 92nd minute goal rounded out the scoring for Jesse Marsch’s side.

David’s hat trick is the first by a host player since Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley.

Canada: Maxime Crépeau, Alistair Johnston, Luc De Fougerolles, Derek Cornelius, Richie Laryea, Tajon Buchanan, Stephen Eustaquio, Ismaël Koné, Ali Ahmed, Cyle Larin, Jonathan David (4-4-2)
