Lloyd Kelly made just seven starts for Newcastle United before joining Juventus in January 2025.
Leeds United are reportedly interested in former Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly this summer.
Toon chiefs sold Kelly just six months after bringing him to St James’ Park on a free transfer. He made only seven starts for the Magpies across all competitions - failing to nail down a regular spot at left-back or centre-back.
PSR pressures at the time saw Newcastle let Kelly and Miguel Almiron leave in January 2025. In truth, the £20million transfer fee proved a no-brainer for a fringe player signed for nothing.
Lloyd Kelly at Juventus
Kelly has endured a mixed time in Turin, overcoming a difficult start to make 46 appearances last season. Club legend Fabrizio Ravanelli tore into the 27-year-old shortly after making his Juve debut.
To his credit, Kelly recovered and helped the club secure Europa League football in 2025-26. His personal highlights include scoring a last-minute Champions League equaliser against Borussia Dortmund.
Newcastle United sell-on clause
Tuttomercatoweb claim Leeds are considering a swoop for the defender. Daniel Farke is aiming to bolster his ranks after comfortably surviving relegation last season.
Juventus would be open to offers but hope to recoup his £20million fee. For Newcastle, this could see a tidy windfall as they inserted a sell-on clause as part of his exit.
The Magpies have attracted criticism for failing - most notably with Elliot Anderson - to leverage a slice of future transfers. It is unclear what percentage Newcastle will net from any Kelly sale.
Lloyd Kelly reflects
On the shock Juve approach, Kelly said last year: "I didn't expect it because at that time. I wasn’t playing too much at Newcastle but I was a key player in the squad and felt important and felt like I was needed. My agent phoned me and just said, 'Would you move to Juventus?’
“It took me 10 seconds to realise what he said and I just said, ‘Yes, let's do it'. Even if the door was slightly ajar, I would have said: ‘Let’s push for this.’ Luckily, it actually happened."
