Sunderland and Newcastle United make enquiries over shock Serie A midfielder move

The latest transfer talk from Sunderland as the Black Cats and North East rivals Newcastle United are both linked with a Serie A midfielder.

Sunderland, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have reportedly made enquiries over a possible deal for a Juventus star.

The Black Cats are yet to make their first new signing of the summer transfer window as they prepare for their maiden Europa League campaign - but they were boosted by the news Granit Xhaka looks set to remain at the club during the new season after strong interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Switzerland international was part of a hectic summer of recruitment 12 months ago as the foundations were put in place for one of the most memorable seasons in Sunderland’s long and proud history.

Although incomings are expected, Black Cats director of football Florent Ghisolfi has already revealed stability will be the focus for the remainder of the current transfer window.

Speaking about what could lie ahead last month, the Italian said: “I believe in stability, season after season. My example is more Athletic Bilbao, where they don't have the choice [because they only select players of Basque heritage], and they have stability. Some clubs can change 15 players a year - we don’t want that. Of course, last summer we needed this refreshment, I have to say. But for this summer, I prefer stability; I prefer to work on the team and the players we have.”

All manner of weird and wonderful names have been linked with a move to Wearside in recent weeks - and there have been suggestions Juventus and France midfielder Khephran Thuram is a target for the Black Cats as doubt remains over his future with the Serie A giants. Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato have gone a step further and have reported the Black Cats, arch rivals Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, now flush from the £115m they received for Elliot Anderson, have all made enquiries over a possible deal to bring Thuram to the Premier League. However, they are also some high-profile suitors for the 25-year-old with Manchester United and Liverpool said to be admirers and Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and European champions Paris Saint-Germain are also named as interested parties.
