Fulham have appointed former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa after Marco Silva’s exit

Sunderland’s Premier League rivals Fulham have appointed former Liverpool and Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach.

The Spaniard has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage after being confirmed as Marco Silva’s successor. Silva left Fulham for Benfica following the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to his successful spell in west London. Fulham were the only team to complete a Premier League double over Sunderland last season, making the appointment of their new head coach of particular interest to Black Cats supporters ahead of the new campaign.

Arbeloa arrives with an impressive playing CV, having represented Real Madrid, Liverpool and West Ham United during his career. He made 98 appearances for Liverpool before later returning to Real Madrid, where he won major honours as part of one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The 43-year-old has since moved into coaching and had been working at Real Madrid before leaving the Spanish giants in May. He has now made the move to the Premier League with Fulham, who have moved quickly to replace Silva. After his appointment was confirmed, Arbeloa said: “It is a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham, the oldest club in London.

“I feel a great sense of responsibility, and I'm deeply grateful to Mr [Shahid] Khan and Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me with Fulham in the Premier League. I am really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with Fulham fans and beginning pre-season with the players next week. I am sure we are going to enjoy an incredible journey together.”
