European club chief confirms interest in signing Aston Villa star

Rumours of their interest have been around all summer.

The chief executive of Juventus has confirmed their interest in signing Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez this summer.

Martinez has been heavily linked with the Italian giants since the end of last season.

The Serie A club’s chief executive, Giovanni Carnevali, has now gone on record and confirmed the 34-year-old Argentina international is a target.

But Carnevali also said other possibilities were being assessed with Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario also believed to be on their list.

He told Sky Sports Italy: “Martinez is playing (at the World Cup) so we have to wait and see.

"He is a goalkeeper who interests us. However, I reiterate what I said earlier regarding Juventus: there could be many opportunities.

“We need to evaluate things carefully, especially right now, given that the valuations for some players are excessively high - unrealistic figures.”

Juventus are yet to make a formal approach to Villa about Martinez and much will depend on their transfer budget.

Villa do not want to sell the World Cup winner but would consider offers above £15million.

Goalkeeping targets have been heavily scouted in case Martinez departs, with Lens’ Robin Risser and Guillaume Restes of Toulouse among those on the club’s list of targets.

Martinez, who joined Villa from Arsenal for £20m in 2020, was also strongly linked with an exit throughout last summer but an anticipated move to Manchester United never materialised.

The one-time Wolves loanee was quickly reintegrated back into the team by boss Unai Emery and went on to play his part in one of Villa’s best seasons for decades, which culminated in them winning the Europa League.

Martinez’s primary focus, for now, is on helping Argentina retain their World Cup crown.

The defending champions survived a major scare on Tuesday, fighting back from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 and advance to the quarter-finals.

They now face Switzerland in the last-eight in the early hours of Sunday morning, UK time.
