Newcastle United confirm final pre-season fixture in rebranded St James’ Park tournament

Newcastle United have confirmed their final pre-season fixture ahead of the Premier League resumption on August 23.

Newcastle United will face Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg in their final warm-up fixture ahead of the Premier League campaign.

Eddie Howe’s squad are back in first-team training on Monday, although those competing at the World Cup will be given extra time off. High-profile omissions will also include Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali - recently sold to bankroll a summer spending spree.

Toon chiefs have added youngsters Ewan Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure to their ranks, with Ajax talent Sean Steur also set to arrive. Darlington, Gateshead, Bristol City, Valencia, Everton and Bayer Leverkusen already feature in the pre-season schedule.

A club statement has now confirmed Strasbourg as Newcastle’s final tune-up before the Premier League season begins against Liverpool on August 23. The women’s team will also take on Inter Milan Women as part of the rebranded VisitMalta Weekender.

“Newcastle United will host French Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg Alsace and Italian Serie A Femminile outfit Inter Women this August, as part of the VisitMalta Weekender 2026,” an announcement read. “A Sunday double-header against top-tier French and Italian opposition completes the lineup for the home pre-season competition, which kicks off against German giants Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

“Scheduled for 15–16 August, the two-day festival of football offers both the Magpies’ men’s and women’s squads a chance to sharpen pre-season preparations in front of a home crowd. All matches across an action-packed weekend will be contested for VisitMalta Cup silverware, adding extra incentive for the club's return to St. James' Park this summer.”
