Sheffield United have signed Brentford winger Romelle Donovan on a season-long loan deal.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has previously admitted that game time is crucial for a young player like Romelle Donovan following confirmation of his move to Sheffield United.
United announced the signing of the Brentford attacker on Wednesday morning, confirming he has joined the club on a season-long loan deal. He strengthens the Blades’ wide options following the recent departure of Andre Brooks.
Described as an “exciting player” by Blades boss Chris Wilder, Donovan will bring versatility to Bramall Lane with his ability to play as both a right-winger and attacking-midfielder. He joined Brentford on a permanent basis from Birmingham City in June last year after spending the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan with the Bees’ B team.

Donovan forced his way into Brentford’s first-team last season, making nine appearances across all competitions. He made his first senior start for the club in a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup before adding four Premier League appearances to his name by the end of the campaign.
Highly rated by the Bees, Donovan, who is a quick, direct runner, will be hoping to take full advantage of his season-long loan move to S2 by securing regular minutes at first-team level for the very first time.
Having broken into the first-team at the Gtech Community Stadium, Bees boss Andrews, who previously worked at Bramall Lane as a coach, admitted getting regular game time is key to any young player’s development.
“Game time is everything for young players – that’s how they develop,” Andrews, speaking to the Hounslow Herald, admitted, speaking back in January. “All the work on the training pitch is geared towards playing games, but with someone like Romelle, it’s about finding the right balance. We try to dip him into the B team to make sure he’s getting minutes.
“With the volume of games over the festive period, that hasn’t always been easy. He hasn’t had as much match exposure as we would like, even though he featured against Sheffield Wednesday.

“The challenge is keeping him close to our first-team environment while ensuring he plays enough football to keep progressing. He just needs to keep going as he is and stay patient – which isn’t always easy for young players because, ultimately, they all want to play.”
Donovan made his Premier League debut as a second half substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in January, marking the first of four cameo appearances he made in the top flight before the end of last term.
Reflecting on Donovan’s Premier League bow, Andrews said: “It was a big moment for him and his family on Saturday,. To step onto the pitch in a Premier League game at such a young age is significant – and he’s had to earn that.
“I felt he deserved the opportunity, even if it was only for a few minutes, and that’s why he looked so comfortable.”
