Huddersfield Town loan signing Matty Young believes that the club are “going to play a big part” in his development as a player.

Young has joined the Terriers on a season-long loan from Sunderland, with the 19-year-old embarking on the fourth loan spell of his career with his new side.

The goalkeeper penned a four-year contract with his parent club in May, and the new Town recruit told HTTV: “Being offered a new deal with two years left shows that Sunderland have put their faith in me to develop in the way I need to develop to push closer to their first team.

“I know that Huddersfield’s going to play a big part in that, and this upcoming season’s going to be massive, in terms of finding out who I really am as a goalkeeper, and how I can progress in a higher league, in front of bigger crowds, more pressure, and that’s something that was one of the big talking points this summer in getting the right loan to the right club, and obviously location for myself, it helps.

“Last year, I did pop in at Sunderland here and then just to check in with them, and I know that’s very important, to make sure that both clubs are very much involved in the loan itself, and making sure that we are both getting the most out of it. I think Huddersfield hit the nail on the head, in terms of everything that it has, and the resources it’s got is brilliant.”

Discussing what he prides himself on as a goalkeeper, Young added: “Definitely building experience, building a CV, where I am a keeper that can be trusted.

“I think one of my biggest parts of the game is presence, making sure that I have a big impact on the backline, and also the team itself. I think taking ownership and taking pride of my work is definitely the biggest thing.

“Obviously I know I’ve got strong attributes, such as my physicality, definitely my kicking, shot-stopping, and definitely coming and claiming crosses, that’s one of my biggest attributes, and taking that pressure off the team. I know that whatever I possess will definitely help the team, whether we’re winning or losing, my job is to keep the ball out of the back of the net, and make sure I can affect the team as much as I can.”

Young has been with the Black Cats since the age of seven, but is yet to make a senior appearance for the Premier League outfit, and the goalkeeper said: “I think all these loans that I’ve been on in the past and now present, and obviously in the future, will definitely play a big part in where I want to go, and what level I want to play at, and what success I want to bring this club during this journey, and also Sunderland itself, when I do hit that stage.”

In addition to his loan spells at Darlington and Salford City, Town’s new signing has been capped by England up to under-20 level, and the recruit said: “I’ve played from 17s up to 20s now, I’ve been around the 21s setup this year, and it’s been surreal to be a part of it, but for me I just see it as a bonus.

“That’s all credit to doing the business at club level, and making sure that’s your main focus, and anything – whether it be an international call-up or anything like that, or game time internationally, it’s a bonus that you’re working hard at a club, you must be doing something right.

“I think that’s part and parcel of development as a young goalkeeper that, when more opportunities come, it shows that I’m heading in the right direction.”
